Dior Fall 2012 Golden Jungle: Crocodile Leather Effect Nails Review

I have never tried any crackle nail polish before. None of them ever appealed to me. I am hardly a nail enthusiast and I still struggle with messy application sometimes. I was just browsing at the Dior counter end of July (Friday 27th to be exact) and the much awaited Fall Collection was already on display! It was lunch time, so I only had the time to try this nail polish.

This limited edition crackle set is supposed to give you crocodile leather effect nails. I’m no expert in leathers and truthfully, I only had a very vague idea of what crocodile leather looked like until I googled it. The nail polish duo is a set of sparkly gold (148) and dark matte khaki (608). The gold acts as a base and the khaki crackles. The instruction leaflet says to apply a layer of gold first, wait for a minute or two (do not let it dry completely) before applying a thin layer of khaki on top. I am NOT known for following instructions and I do love to experiment, so I went with 2 coats of gold + 1 thin coat of khaki and 2 coats of gold + 1 thick layer of khaki.

Result? If I applied according to instructions, I find that the shape of the crackle is finer, less apparent. Also, I experienced flaking when the polish is applied too thin. When I applied it thicker, the effect on my nails was more to my taste. The colours are bolder and the shape of the crackle more appealing. Each nail crackles differently, and I had an amusing time figuring out what it looks like. In fact, the SAs at Dior and I had a good laugh when one of them looked like turtle shell instead of crocodile! LOL!

Below is a photo to show you all my fingers (except thumbs). My right index finger looks like a spider web in real life. My fave has to be my right ring finger. If you followed me on instagram (@ChloeAsh), I also showed you how my nails look under direct sunlight. The shimmering gold base warms up the khaki very well, and the warmth of gold shines through. Under fluorescent light, the khaki is darker.

This set retails for RM96 and it is already available at your local Dior counters since 1 August. Have you tried or seen this yet? This is my first crackle experience, and it’s been lovely getting all sorts of compliments!

xoxo Lily

I really hoped I would not like it, because I normally do not care about the whole crackle thing, but this is gorgeous! I think the crackle effect is more ‘sophisticated’ and the colour combo is right on! Aaaand another Dior thing onto the wishlist :p.

Yes, the colour combo is very sexy. It looks different in different angles and lighting. Sometimes it looks like rusty bronze, sometimes like golden khaki, very unique and classy. When I applied the khaki colour unevenly, the crackles are more interesting!

Lol! I think they’re different every time you apply it! I tried to apply quickly when the polishes are still wet and the effect is also quite interesting.

I saw the OPI crackles before and it didn’t appeal to me at all! This one is definitely a must try. Very unique crackles that give you a different experience each time you apply!

When I first heard Dior was doing crackle I wanted to curl up and die. I think it an awful trend. Its nice to know however that they managed to get it to look quite classy and that price point is pretty good for 2 polishes :)

I love that these crackle in more roundish patterns instead of linear like other crackle polishes. I wonder what Dior did differently. Thinking of picking them up!

LOL! You don’t have to like everything Dior just to be a fan. There have been some duds before. I’ve never succumbed to the crackle trend, but this one is really different. It’s like major nail art. Hahaha… more Fall collection to come!
