Review: REN Radiance Perfection Serum

I haven’t tried anything from REN before. REN is a brand that touts to use only clean ingredients, so the products don’t have parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, petrolatum, synthetic fragrances, colours, glycols or silicones (among other things). I got the products at Cult Beauty because there was a drool worth goody bag I wanted, and of course, I wanted to try something from REN. I bought the Radiance Perfection Serum 30ml and another serum which I’ll reveal in due time (haven’t tested it yet). So I thought I’d shed light on this radiance boosting serum.

REN Radiance Perfection Serum

It is “a multi active serum formulated to reboot the skin’s energy cycle, visibly perfect skin tone and leave skin looking energized, radiant and luminous”. This serum has bio extracts of licorice, tyrosinase inhibitor, vitamin C, hyluronic acid, glycogen, and magnesium. Before I started using this serum, I was on a brightening phase, and then I switched to a hydrating phase. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you would have seen photos of my naked face – a naked face that I’m quite satisfied with (ahem!). So, I do not expect to see much results from this, other than to keep my skin even toned. I use 1 pump in the day, 2 pumps at night, after toner, before moisturizer.

top off balance

Photo above was taken a couple of weeks ago. I have used the last drop and on to my next serum already. Serum junkie, I am. This serum is quite light but it doesn’t absorb into the skin too quickly. It takes a bit of massaging before skin feels comfortable. Naturally, it takes longer at night when I use 2 pumps. REN doesn’t use synthetic fragrances, and this Radiance Perfection Serum smells like vanilla orange slash cod liver oil minus the fishy smell. HAHAHAHA! I don’t know why it reminds me of Scott’s Emulsion.

Another thing to note is the expiry. Same story – natural products, less preservatives, so you’ll need to use your products faster. I used this consistently, 3 pumps a day, and I used up this bottle in 3 months. So, if you use this 1 pump just once a day, you can definitely finish it in 9 months.

Results? My skin’s luminosity is maintained, my skin is even toned, and my colleague commented that my freckles are less noticeable, but let’s not kid ourselves. I see no improvements in my freckles. However, I can tell you that I never once broke out when I was using this, and my skin remained bright, never once dull. Does that say something?

What do you like from REN? Have you tried this serum before? I don’t think I’ll repurchase this, because I’m not in love with the texture or the scent, and it worked well just as a maintenance product. Probably not fair since I didn’t need more brightening, but you know, just saying :-P I received a deluxe sample of their Moroccan Rose Bath Oil and it smells heavenly! I might get the Moroccan Rose bath products next :-)

I’ve used the mask and AHA concentrate from this series and was curious about the serum. Not buying it now, lol. I really enjoyed what I’ve tried but the cloying fruit smells are getting to me now. Wish some of their stuff were unscented, like the cleansing balm at least.

    • Lily

When I use scented stuff, I’d sometimes wish they were unscented… but you know, when I use unscented stuff, I’d wish there was some subtle scent I like. LOL!

Ahaha, you crack me up with your red arrows and straight talking! I totally know what you mean — I used the mask from this range for years, and love the VitaMineral Rescue Cream but I find their serums quite useless + overpriced for what they are! Yes I have tried them all (also a serum junkie). I put their Moroccan Rose shower gel on my xmas wishlist every year though, because that smells so divine and leaves my skin feeling pretteh — though again, horribly overpriced and I won’t buy it for myself ON PRINCIPLE. lol

    • Lily

Ah, *high five* fellow serum junkie :-P I have to say, I sometimes refuse to buy something purely on principle too. And I am a straight talker even in real life. I just don’t know how else to say it. I envy those who can write so well the piece looks and smells like flowers. Me? You see what you get. *sigh* No mystery there!

Very intrigued by Ren, and I’m waiting for the next but round of sales to get their facial oil. I’m probably just crazy, but I prefer the brightening, tone evening products from Asian brands, or especially-catered-to-Asian-skin stuff, as I feel those are stronger and actually do stuff. For ‘clean gentle’ brands like Ren, I’d be ogling their skin soothing stuff. Know what you mean about the fishy smell… I was spitting expletives when I opened a sample of Dr. Perricone’s something and thought the SA gave me a rotten, expired tester. I don’t know if it’s good or bad that the fishy smell is meant to be so…

    • Lily

I experienced great results from Diorsnow, and of course, the range is tailor made for Asians. Funny enough, I haven’t tried any brightening range from Japanese / Asian brands! LOL!

  • Icaria

Oh now I want the Rose Bath OIl! That sounds divine! Sadly we only have a few offerings here, I do want to try their mask but it’s a little on the expensive side.

    • Lily

Oh, you can buy it online, my dear Helene. You know, those really easy to access, buy with a click kind of sites that are very dangerous? Yeah, those. HAHAHAHA!

      • Icaria

Laugh all you want Darling! I won’t give in, if I do I won’t have food anymore! :D

        • Lily

Hahaha! I know what you mean, trust me, I do :-)

Hey Lily, I’ve tried the mask and I loved it back then, but I have since then discovered better stuff (*cough* Omorovicza) so I’m moving on. I am also really interested in trying the rose range though!

    • Lily

Those roses smell really good. I have a sample of the bath oil and it smells wonderful. Oh yeah, I love the Omorovicza mask and cleansing balm!!

It sounds pretty nice. I’ve tried a few REN products in the past, and I remember liking them a lot. The one ‘con’ is the expiration date, I guess, but like you said, that’s just because it’s a natural product. I have a few products in my stash with a 6 month expiration date, and I already that I’ll neeeeeeeever be able to finish them…

    • Lily

The expiration date is a good and bad thing, I suppose. It’s great that there’s less preservatives, but not so good for us who have a few too many products? LOL!

  • TracyBeautyReflections

Sounds lovely! I’ve never tried the brand..yet. :) So many lines, so little time haha!

    • Lily

There are so many brands I want to try too! Same problem… maybe we shouldn’t be too greedy and stick to what works?

  • Victoria

I am currently using the Glycolactic mask from this series every week and it really does help brighten the face. I am also using the cleanser gel from the combination series (green) and love it. I also finished up the toner from the combination series as well and love it to bits. Pity it is not value for money because I finished up the 150 ml toner worth RM123 in just 2.5 months of usage. As for serums, I am quite happy with ANR II as my go-to serum and would not be trying any other serum anytime soon. Could you please recommend a good brightening serum that has worked for you?

    • Lily

Hi Victoria, I used the whole range of Diorsnow skincare, with day and night serums and it did a lot of difference on my skin. I guess it really depends on your skin type, but I could actually SEE the results in 6 months.

I’ve tried a few things from Ren but sadly I only like the Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask – it really clears up my skin in terms of removing dead skin cells from the surface. The cleansing balm and day moisturizer for sensitive skin irritated my skin unfortunately.

    • Lily

Hi Yu Ming, I’m glad the mask works for you. I’ve heard good things about it too, but I think I’ll pass for now. I tried this because I was curious about this brand, but first impression is a little ‘meh’. I’ll move on to another brand now. LOL!
